In the 19th century, many socialists, although not all, identified Jews with capitalism and did not pay note to the existence of the Jewish worker. Traces anti-Jewish motifs and antisemitic ideological constructions in the writings of leading European socialists of the 19th-early 20th centuries: Charles Fourier, Alphonse Toussenel, Pierre Leroux, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, the Anarcho-Syndicalists, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Ferdinand Lassalle, Moses Hess, Karl Kautsky, Belgian and Austrian socialists, English socialists from Robert Owen to the Social-Democrats, and Mikhail Bakunin. Some of these writers condemned Jews as a people, while others condemned the "Jewish spirit". Toward the end of the 19th century, even racial antisemitism made its way into socialist thought. Socialist antisemitism had much in common with that of the "bourgeoisie"; both of them had the same roots. Antisemitism was a corrupting factor in the socialist movement and prevented a clear analysis of capitalism; it strengthened antisemitism in general and pushed many Jews into the Jewish nationalist camp.
