UD was born in Danzig, Germany. When the situation became difficult, UD's father went to England to make arrangements for the family's move, but to their surprise, he returned. UD, 16 years old, was asked to leave her grammar school. She took secretarial courses with a Jewish group and took a job with a Jewish import-export firm. HD obtained a holiday visa, from the British Consulate, to visit family in London. She travelled from Danzig to Berlin and then boarded a train to England. UD joined a Dutch group, which helped her avoid Nazi soldiers. In England, UD stayed with relatives and then another family. She got a job through the Bloomsbury House as a dressmaker. Her parents, 12 year old sister and grandparents also came to England. Remaining family was sent to the ghetto and died in concentration camps. After the war, UD married a survivor and her parents returned to Germany.
