BF was born to a prominent and prosperous furniture dealer in Augsburg, Germany in June 1930. After Kristallnacht on November 9th 1938 her father was picked up by the Gestapo and sent to Dachau concentration camp for three months. In the summer of 1939, BF and her family left for London, England arriving during the blitz. BF was evacuated to the countryside along with other children. She lived with the Palmer family who were Christian. Later BF and her family immigrated to America and prospered there. BF wanted to get rid of her German identity and become more American. She married a non-German Jew. Her mother died in 1951. Her father, despite having mental illness associated with his imprisonment in Dachau and other issues, eventually remarried twice. He did however find it hard to keep a job because of his disorders. He died in 1981.
