MJ was born in 1927, to a Polish Catholic family. Before the war she lived with her parents and siblings in Mosina, a town in west-central Poland. Her family spoke German and her father even served in the German army during WWI. MJ remembers anti-Polish provocations by the German minority in the pre-war years. In 1939, after the Nazi invasion, a group of Polish civilians were publicly shot in Mosina and the terror began. In 1943 MJ's whole family was arrested, along with other Polish families. Her parents and several siblings died in Auschwitz, while she was sent to a concentration camp for Polish children in Lodz. There she survived hunger and typhus. In 1944 she was sent to a farm in Dzierzaznia village. She worked the land and helped to clean the house of a German official. Local Poles secretly brought bread to workers. When MJ was 16 she was transferred to Ravensbruck concentration camp for women. Many Jewish girls that she knew in Ravensbruck, were sent to gas chambers. To this day MJ feels lost and less worthy.
