In 1943, Gitel Hollander was forcibly removed from her home by Hungarian forces. She and her family were relocated to a local ghetto, where they lived for nearly a year and a half. They were deported to Auschwitz, and Hollander was separated from her family in the concentration camp. In 1944, she was transported in an enclosed train to a labour camp near Bremen, where she worked in a bomb factory. Later, she was moved to another labour camp in Plum to help build ditches for the German forces. She was liberated from Hoffbrooke by the Allied forces, where they were provided with food and medical care.
