BookBorn in Groznyy, Chechnia, 1938. Father bank clerk; Mother housewife. Studies at Russian school, 1945-1956. Childhood memories: grandmother orthodox, thus Jewish festivals celebrated at home; mother religiously observant but not father; Chechnians returning to their republic after Stalin's death 1956-1957; good relations with Jews who facilitated their return. Locksmith, 1957-1964. Studying economics in institute by correspondence. After graduation working in bank, then in statistics center, 1966-1992. Marriage to mountain Jew, 1960; three children. In early 1990s Groznyyan Jews learned much about conditions in Israel from Israeli radio broadcasts in Russian, yet not inclined to emigrate until relations with local population began to deteriorate. Daughter immigrating to Israel with family in 1992. Soon after conditions worsened so he also immigrated with family that same year.
