Family among founders of Beer Sheva. Member of Palmah. At 25 years old directed labor and housing affairs in southern district, appointed by Yizhak Ilan and Golda Meir, then Minister of Labor and Housing. Thousands of Jews working at that time in Negev - between Eilat, Sedom and Beer Sheva - surfacing roads and mining phosphate, while living in temporary labor camps. Decision to fight for workers' residential rights. Suggesting establishment of Yeroham and Dimona; Ben Gurion approving, but government opposing establishment of settlements in middle of nowhere. Jewish Agency (JA) Absorption Department supporting stuggle by bringing newcomers to Negev. Department head Giora Yoseftal and JA representative in Negev deciding in favor. Government considering Yeroham a permanent settlement from its beginning: Ben Gurion showing interest; visit of Israel's president in Yeroham. Interviewee helping new Negev settlers find employment. Department of Public Works supplying workers for Negev projects and for construction of Eilat. Later responsible for vocational training in southern Israel. Maintained that stronger local leadership could have promoted Yeroham more successfully.
