Born in Czernowitz, Romania, 1935. Deportation with brother to Transnistria (WWII), rescue by neighbors who hid them. Relocation to the south on Russian entry to Rumania. Father, arrested for Zionist activities; when about to go to Israel in 1945, disembarked upon hearing of wife's and child's rescue. Relocation to Bucharest. Studies at Jokno, a Jewish vocational high school (established by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) in Bucharest, until school's nationalization by the communists in 1947. Efforts to immigrate to Israel. Father losing his job due to request to immigrate. Immigration to Israel with parents aboard ship Transylvania, 1950. Absorption procedures in Shaar Haaliya. Relocation to immigrants camp in Athlit and later to transit camp in Tira. Feelings of deprivation in comparison with kibbutz children.
