Thank you letter for sending food package. Gives description of Starke's experiences in Auschwitz. Arrested after being informed upon, 1942. Sent to Auschwitz, where his family was killed. There, put in unit responsible for building in the camp, working with Jews from all over Europe. For awhile shared his bed with Leon Blum from France. Transferred to Buna, 1944. Made Kapo. With Russian advancement labour was lacking, so less men were sent to gas-chambers. Numerous prisoners killed in air-strikes, since they had no place to hide. From Buna participated in 'March of Freedom', 1945. He believes was, in fact, a death march - for many collapsed along the way. Discusses: Administration of Auschwitz; the digging of holes in frozen ground - men, women and children being stripped naked and shot with machine guns; people piled on top of each other - wounded and dead alike; escape attempts from Buna made especially by Russian and Polish speakers; own escape attempt, capture and sentence to hang; being spared at last minute; being moved from camp to camp; eventually reaching Berlin; working building airports in Berlin as expert in concrete; continuation of march, and coming across the Germans retreat; being left at that point by their German guards.
