Father born in Bohemia, came as a child to Austria under liberal, enlightened government that accepted Jews. Around WWI Jewish 'Blau-Weiss' organization was established, influenced by similar German movements. Over years atmosphere in Austria changed, by 1933 difference between Jews and non-Jews felt. During this period Dr.Schwager joined Jewish organizations, establishing a tie for him with other Jews, planting seeds that led him to make Aliyah and join the Haganah.
