Thedor Levi was born in Lodz, Poland in 1905. His parents came from the Baltics - Riga, Nitau. He was from an assimilated, intellectual Jewish family. His father was an actor and merchant, comfortable background. He attended the Hebrew Gymnasia in Lodz, then a non-Jewish, German-speaking school. In 1921/23 he moved to Berlin, attended Handelshochschule (Polytechnic) simultaneously working as a journalist in German newspapers. From 1926-1929, he was sent to Warsaw as a representative of SDP (Social Democratic Party) and newspaper. In 1929 he moved to Danzig where he served as the chief editor and publisher of the weekly Danziger Echo. He also represented other German newspapers until the rise of the Nazi regime. He describes the Danzig Jewish community, separation and later integration and cooperation between the Western German-speaking Jews, the Eastern Yiddish speaking Jews and the Zionists. Political support for Danzig Jews especially from Hermann Rauschnigg, President of the Danzig senate. The Nazis closed the Danziger Echo, Levi was exiled and later immigrated to Eretz Yisrael in 1940 via Stockholm and Paris. In Israel, he has contributed to Davar, Haaretz and various advertising journals.
