Gedud Haavoda (Labor Brigade), 1920-1926

He-Halutz groups and groups of Halutzim in Slovakia; emmissaries of the Gedud in Slovakia; immigration to Palestine; the refusal of the Gedud to accept the group from Western Europe; life in the "Mahaneh" group in Rehovot and the contacts with the Gedud. Born in Latvia, 1914. Relocation of family to Vilna a year later, and to Warsaw 1935. Member of Betar. Jewish and Hebrew education. Law studies in Warsaw and one year of law practice. Work as actor and pianist. Fleeing to the USSR after Nazi invasion and working as actor there, and in Anders Army, from 1941. Popularity saved him from experiencing antisemitism. Defection in Cairo, 1942. Help from Hagana members. Motivation: Zionism. Preparing to immigrate to Israel throughout youth. Easy absorption in Israel. Six months stay in Kefar Menahem. Relocation to Tel Aviv and absorption into artistic life.
