Born in Offenbach, 1897 to assimilated Jewish family. Prior to 1920 good relations between western Jews and Christians in Offenbach, but western Jews prejudiced against eastern European Jews. Married non-Jew in 1920 and moved to Berlin. Interned in seven different prisons during WWII but eventually escaped. Found shelter with Duchess Herzogin von Arensberg. Mother committed suicide to avoid transport to camps. Brother sent east and liquidated. Sister and her husband (also non-Jew) deported to Auschwitz, but survived. Most of close family liquidated by Nazi regime.
