Met Buchenwald victims. Jewish chaplains thrown, unofficially, into relief work. Chaplain Abe Klausner at Dachau. Chaplain Max Brudie. Problem of diseases caused to survivors by over-feeding by American soldiers. Activity in Beriha begins in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. Sylvia Neulander. Contacts with Jewish Brigade. Activities in Theresienstadt. Cooperation with Russians during first months. Conflict between his role as U.S. army chaplain and illegal Beriha and Aliyah Bet work. Unofficial support from senior Presbyterian chaplain. Problem with Colonel who tried to stop his illegal work. Use of illegally procured trucks from American army for Beriha. Organization of relief supplies by Jewish chaplains with the help of friends in the U.S. Support from Eisenhower. "Heter" (dispensation) from Jerusalem chief Rabbi Herzog to move emissaries and DPs on Sabbath. Threats by colonel Tiernan to frustrate illegal work. Political indoctrination of emissaries from Palestine. Beginning 1946 deterioration of Soviet-American relationship. HIAS-JDC tensions. Anti-Zionist drive to move DPs to U.S. and not Palestine. May 1946 - Lipman demobilized. Becomes full time Beriha liaison officer with U.S. army. Bad relationship between western European and Eastern European Jewish communities. Life in Heidelberg with wife. ; Involvement in Exodus plan. On trip to U.S. raises money in Hollywood for Americans for Hagana. Becomes IRO official because of lack of funds of the Jewish Agency. Return to U.S, after his appeal to Sharett and Dori for employment in Israel is denied.
