Title The scattering of Amalek : a model for understanding the Ukrainian-Jewish conflict.
Host Item East European Jewish Affairs 24,1 (1994) 39-47
Description Argues that Ukrainian antisemitism has scarcely been studied, despite its brutality and unusual longevity. States that Ukrainian Jew-hatred is in its essence a normal conflict between socioeconomic groups, based on a long-standing struggle for existence. Therefore, the use of the term "antisemitism" is misleading. Surveying the historical background of the conflict, contends that in the 17th and 18th centuries the Jews were part of the economic machinery that effected Polish control over the Ukraine. The attacks on Jews during the great Ukrainian revolts must be seen as essentially anti-Polish and anti-Catholic uprisings. From the same perspective, the 1919 pogroms are seen as secondary events in the overall conflict with the Bolsheviks and Soviet Russia. Ukrainian collaboration with the Nazis and participation in the Holocaust is explained by the identification of the Jews with communists.
