English title: World chess champion Garry Kasparov was beaten by Natan Sharansky, an Ex-Soviet dissident and a current Israeli minister, in a simultaneous exhibition in Jerusalem. [picture] |
Scope and content |
Ex-Soviet dissident and refusnik, Natan Sharansky, did Israel proud when he achieved a draw in a chess match with visiting world champion Garry Kasparov. Admittedly Kasparov was simultaneously playing 20 other matches against other well-known Israeli personalities, including MKs, journalists and others. Nevertheless, Sharansky's achievement was very special. He said he consoled Kasparov by reminding him that they were both graduates of the Soviet Chess School. Sharansky was chess champion of his school and then of his home city. "When I was in the darkness of solitary confinement, I used to play chess in my head to keep sane. I had hoped to win," he added. Photo shows: Kassparov thinking during the chess-game with Sharansky. |
