Title עולים חדשים מתימן.
Additional Titles New Immigrants from Yemen. [picture]
Scope and content When in July it was revealed that Israel had been conducting a secret airlift of the remaining Jewish community of Yemen, the new immigrants themselves were thrust into the blinding glare of national - and even international - publicity. Thankfully, the media and the public now seem to have got a little more used to one of the newest - and certainly one of the most exotic - groups to arrive and features and photos of them in the national press appear less and less frequently. Today, the new immigrants ('Olim hadashim') are beginning to feel more settled in their new country and the process of their moving out of the absorption centres in Rehovot and Ashkelon and into their own mortgaged apartments has begun. The adult males are beginning to find work and with it, financial independence from the state and from the Jewish Agency. The Yemeni women are finding life in Israel especially rewarding. Compared to their lives in the Arab Republic of Yemen, Israel has brought easy basic benefits to their day-to-day lives: their status - as women and as wives - has been greatly enhanced and they enjoy the rights that they previously could not even have contemplated
their care for the household and their children is made much more comfortable by the sigple technological appliances that most Israelis take for granted and the finding of partners for the marriage of their offspring is no longer restricted to the tiny population of 1,200 that the Jews of Yeeen used to represent.
Of course some families one adjusting more easily and quickly to Israel than others but all the indications are that the new immigrants from Yemen are well on their way to full absorption. There is no denying that the Yemeni Jews have a remerkable culture and stunning facial features.
