Title It was disclosed today by the Jewish Agency that 246 Jews from Yemen have been brought to Israel in the past year in small groups of twenty or so people at a time.
Scope and content This year so far 189 arrived with 24 coming this month. About 900 Jews remain in Sana according to the Agency, adding that their lives are not in danger. The Agency would have preferred to have kept the aliyah a secret until all the Jews had arrived. During the past month or so the ultra-orthodox haredi community have been fighting amongst themselves to prevent the newly arrived Yemenite Jews becoming too influenced by secular groups. Although the aliyah was under censorship to prevent antagonizing the Yemen government, Many cryptic references have been made in ultra-orthodox newspapers to the presence in Israel of 'new immigrants from a distressed Asian country'. One such article that was to run in a haredi newspaper a few weeks ago was stopped by the censor. The newspaper appealed to the High Court which gave the government five days to explain why they were not permitted to publish. In the meantime the censor, for some unexplained reason, lifted the ban and the story was published. Following the publication in both the haredi and popular press the Agency decided to hold a press conference to clear the air. Uri Gordon, the Jewish Agency's Chairman of Immigration and Absorption said that he regretted the lack of media discipline that undermined the importance of secrecy to ensure the safety of Jews anywhere in the world who are in danger. A few years ago the orderly secret aliyah of Jews from Ethiopia was suddenly stopped when media publicity exposed the secret flight of Ethiopian Jewry. Uri Gordon told journalist visiting the absorption centers where the new immigrants live at present, that the censor must be strong and insistent when Jewish lives are in danger. Unfortunately human nature being what it is, people do not always learn by their mistakes. Photo shows: a newly arrived immigrant brother and sister at the Rehovot Absorption Centre.
