Biographical summary Ernst Sommer (Iglau/Jihlava 29.10.1888-London 20.10.1955) German-speaking author. 1920-1938 lawyer, city councilor, Social Democrat activist in Karlsbad/Karlovy Vary. 1938-55 London, including work for government in exile. Sommer was perhaps the first to describe gas murder, concentration camp, & choices of response in fiction. His attempted return to Czechoslovakia after the war was refused.
Ownership history The material was donated by Nelly Engel-Thieberger (London).
