The "Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt" of Shanghai was one of many German-language periodicals published for Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai in an effort to escape National Socialism. Before World War I, the Jewish population in Shanghai was estimated to be 700; by 1945, the population increased to 25,000 as Jews sought refuge from persecution in Europe (this statistic includes Russian Jews who fled after the 1917 revolution). After failing to obtain visas to other countries, many Jews immigrated to Shanghai because they could enter its free port without visas. Most Jewish refugees left after the end of World War II (Encyclopaedia Judaica, 2007). "Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt" reported on community life of the Central European Jews.

Subtitle varies. Nr. 1 (1940) has the subtitle: Offizielles Organ der Juedischen Gemeinde. After Nr. 2 (1940), issues have the title: Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt der Juedischen Gemeinde mitteleuropaeischer Juden in Shanghai (Jewish community of Central European Jews). Jahrgang 4-6 (1943-1945) have the subtitle: Juedisches Nachrichtenblatt for Central European Jews (Mitteleurop. Juden). Jahrgang 5, Nr. 6-12 (1944) has the subtitle: Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt fuer Mitteleuropaeische Juden. Title changes to The Jewish Voice of the Far East = Juedisches Nachrichtenblatt with Jahrgang 6, Nr. 46 (1945). Starting with Jahrgang 6, Nr. 46 (1945) text also in English. Twice a week |
