Photograph is printed in a book with a description beneath printed description: "(I. Kings, xvi:24.)--'And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver.' The city of Samaria was built by Omri about 925 B.C. For two centuries it was the capital of the Ten Tribes of Israel[.] It was a seat of idolatry a temple of Baal was built here by Ahab and destroyed by Jehu. Arah was buried here. After the capture of the city by Shalmaneser and the exile of the Ten Tribes, Shechem became the capital of the new residents. The pillars we see in the picture are supposed to be the remains of the palace built by Herod in honor of Augustus. The site of this city is now occupied by the village of Sebustieh, and it is built chiefly out of the ruins of the ancient city. It is one of the most beautiful sites for a city in Palestine. Its strength, fertility and beauty have been praised by all who have seen it." See 5184BAI/LVi102CAJS (Voyager # 358939). Quality: Good |
