ספרטה הייתה אחת משתי המדינות החשובות ביותר ביוון. בעוד אתונה עמדה בראש הגוש הדמוקרטי, עמדה ספרטה בראש הגוש האוליגרכי ומשכה אליה תשומת לב רבה הודות לעוצמתה, לסדריה המדיניים, לחינוך אזרחיה הקפדני ולכוחה הצבאי. האזרחים הצטיינו בצניעות הליכותיהם, במשמעת, בציות לחוקים, בגבורתם ובמסירותם למדינה. סיפורים רבים סופרו על ספרטה שהיללו את חיי אזרחיה. האגדה והמציאות התערבבו בסיפורים זו בזו, אך האידאליזציה של ספרטה האריכה ימים יותר מן המציאות ההיסטורית. ספרטה חדלה מלהתקיים, אבל המיתוס של ספרטה הוסיף ומוסיף לחיות. גם היום שגורות בפינו מטבעות הלשון: 'אורח חיים ספרטני', סגפני ומסתפק במועט, ו'דרך התבטאות לקונית', קצרה ושנונה. בספר מובאות שלוש יצירות של פלוטרכוס, אסופות של אמרות של גברים ספרטניים, נשים ספרטניות ומנהגים ספרטניים עתיקים.
