"יריעת הרומן סוכת שלום נפרשת על רקע נופי הגליל, ומתפתלת בין סמטאות צפת במאה השש עשרה. העלילה מתמקדת בחוג תלמידי האר"י, ומפנה מבט אל הווי החיים של אנשי צפת באותם ימים: מקובלים, תלמידי חכמים, סוחרים, בעלי מלאכה ופשוטי עם. במרכז העלילה עומדת דמותו המורכבת של ר' חיים ויטאל, תלמידו של האר"י שהעלה על הכתב את תורת רבו. במקביל מוארת דמותו המשורר ר' ישראל נג'ארה שבצעירותו נחשב הולל ופוחז ורק בודדים הבינו את גדולתו, ושל הסוחר העשיר רודריגו גלאנטי - בן למשפחת אנוסים שנמלט מאימת האינקוויזיציה בספרד ואט אט מצא בצפת את עצמו ואת אלהיו. סוכת שלום הוא רומן עשיר מבע, שבו מתרפק הסופר על נופי עיר הולדתו הקסומה, ומצייר אותם ביד אמן. עיר המקובלים ההיסטורית מוצגת בספר כמרכז רוחני ודתי., וכעולם שתוססים בו חיי מלאכה ומסחר. כך קם לתחייה עולם ומלואו שנע בין אור וחושך, בין כמיהה לתיקון וגאולה ובין עול הייסורים במציאות החומרית." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
