" ותהי לו לאשה ויאהבֶהָ, דן בייצוגי האבות והאימהות של עם ישראל באמנות החזותית הנוצרית. ההגוּת הנוצרית לדורותיה, שהנוצרים הם לדידהּ הממשיכים האמיתיים של עם ישראל, אינה רואה באבות ובאימהות המקראיים דמויות היסטוריות בלבד, אלא מפרשת את מסלול חייהם על דרך האלגוריה ורואה אותם כדמויות מופת וכסמלים. יצירות האמנות המתארות את האבות והאימהות מציגות, לכאורה, את הכתובים כפשוטם, אולם התבוננות וחקירה מגלות ביצירות רובדי משמעויות הסמויים מן העין במבט ראשון, והן מעניקות לצופה רמזים המוליכים אותו בנתיביה המפותלים של הפרשנות הנוצרית. הספר מתאר יצירות מאז תקופת הנצרות הקדומה ועד העת החדשה, והוא בא להדגיש את התמורות הדתיות והחברתיות ואת ערכי המוסר שהשפיעו על היצירה האמנותית. בכך הוא מבקש להוליך את הקורא־הצופה בסבך הקשרים שבין הסיפור המקראי, הפרשנות הנוצרית, תפיסת העולם המערבית והאמנות החזותית". -- מהמעטפת האחורית.
