"הפקד סם וינדהם מגיע להודו. הוא תשוש, מחלים מפציעה קשה שספג בשדה הקרב ונאבק בהתמכרות לאופיום. הודו אמורה להוות בעבורו דף חדש אחרי שאיבד את כל משפחתו וחבריו במלחמת העולם הראשונה, אבל כלכתה היא לא מקום להתחלות חדשות. הקולוניה הבריטית המהבילה רוחשת אי נחת. ההודים נאבקים על עצמאותם, והבריטים מהדקים את אחיותם בניסיון לשמור על שליטה. מיד עם הגעתו נשלח וינדהם לוירת רצח רגיש במיוחד: פקיד בכיר בממשל הבריטי נרצח, ולפיו נתחב פתק ועליו איום: "אזהרה אחרונה. דם אנגלי יורום ברחובות. צאו מהודו!" מפקדיו של וינדהם חוששים שהרצח יגביר את המתח הפוליטי בעיר המעורערת ממילא ויגלוש למרד, ודוחקים בו לסיים במהירות את החקירה ולהבריו על הרצח בפעולת טרור. אבל וינדהם מתעקש לנהל חקירה מדוקדקת שמובילה אותו, יחד עם קצין בריטי יהיר וסמל הודי חדור שליחות, מארמונותיהם המפוארים של נסיכים ועד למאורות אופיום אפלות, בניסיון למצוא את הרוצח ולהציל את יציבותה של האימפריה." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
