"מרביתם של השירים שבאסופה זו נכתבו לפני לפני כ- 1,400-1,100 שנה, בתקופת שושלת טאנג, בין השנים 618 ל-907 לספירה. את כולם כתבו אנשים שחיו בסין, אנשים שחיו סגנונות חיים מגוונים מאוד - פקידי ממשל, מראשי ממשלה ועד פקידים במשרד המים, מהגרים, מורים בודהיסטים, נזירות דאואיסטיות, זונות, פילגשים ונזירי הרים מתבודדים. היו בהם כאלה ששירים היו בעבורם חיזור ובמילותיהם פיתו אהוב או אהובה. היו בהם שבשירה ביטאו את אהבתם ליין. היו בהם כאלה שביקשו להתפעל מטבע העולם, מטבע האדם, מטבע הקשרים שבין גברים לבין נשים, או מטבעה של חברות טובה. היו בהם כאלה שביקשו להבין את שפתן של ציפורים, את שפתם של העצים ושל העשבים, את שפת הנהרות, האגמים והימים. אחרים ביקשו למחות על מלחמות בני האדם, על שחיתויות שלטוניות, על עוול כלשהו שנעשה למישהו. היו בהם כאלה שביקשו ללמד את הקורא כיצד לחיות טוב. אחרים ביקשו ללמד את הקורא טוב-לב. ואחרים פשוט ביקשו לתת מבע לרגש כלשהו, רגעי, חולף, שאלמלא שירם היה נבלע בין נפתולי הזמן, נגוז ונעלם. כולם אהבו את המילה הכתובה, ורבים מהם הבינו את מגבלותיה. וכל אחד מהם היה, לפחות בעינינו, רב־אמן מופלא בשימוש במילים". -- מן ההקדמה.
