"בשנת 1945, עם תום מלחמת העולם השנייה, התכנס בנירנברג צוות תביעה שתפקידו היה להעמיד לדין את פושעי המלחמה הנאצים. לצוות המשפטי הצטרפו גם פסיכיאטר, ד"ר דאגלס קלי, ופסיכולוג, גוסטב גילברט, שתפקידם היה לבחון את מסוגלותם של הנאשמים לעמוד לדין - וכן את שפיותם. בעזרת הכלים שעמדו לרשותם באותם ימים - ובראשם מבחני רורשך ומבחני IQ, ניסו קלי וגילברט לבחון אם מוחותיהם של פושעי המלחמה תקינים ונורמטיביים. גילברט חשב שהם סבלו מפתולוגיות עמוקות, בעוד שקלי הניח שהם פשוט אנשים לא מוסריים, ואפילו מרושעים. אבל בסופם של משפטי נירנברג לא הגיעו החוקרים למסקנה חותכת. הפרוטוקלים של המבחנים אבדו למשך שנים רבות וכעת, לאחר גילוים, מנסה ג'ואל א' דימסדייל, פסיכיאטר, לנהל דרכם מחקר היסטורי ופסיכיאטרי ולענות על השאלה שטורדת את מנוחתו ואת מנוחתם של רבים האם יכול אדם נורמטיבי לבצע רצח עם?"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
