"השנה היא 1992. גבריאל בן העשר מתגורר עם הוריו ואחותו בשכונה של זרים ודיפלומטים בעיר הבירה של בורונדי. אביו הוא יזם צרפתי שהגיע לאפריקה כסטודנט, ואילו אימו היא בת רואנדה יפה ואלגנטית. בזמן שגבריאל משחק עם חבריו במכונית נטושה שהפכו לממלכה פרטית, תושבי העיר מתכוננים בהתרגשות לבחירות הדמוקרטיות הראשונות. גבריאל מתקשה להבין מדוע דווקא עכשיו אימו מחליטה לעזוב את הבית. כשהנשיא הנבחר נרצח, המדינה מידרדרת לכאוס המהדהד את המתרחש ברואנדה. גבריאל אמנם מנסה לדבוק בכל מאודו בשגרה ולחלום על היום שבו הוריו ישובו לחיות יחד, אך לבסוף מגיע הרגע שבו הוא מבין שגם עליו נגזר לבחור צד. עכשיו גבריאל בן 33. הוא חי באירופה, אבל לא מוצא טעם בחייו עד שהוא מקבל בשורה המשכנעת אותו לנסוע לבורונדי. ארץ קטנה הוא רומן התבגרות רב-עוצמה הפורט על כל מנעד הרגשות. כאחד הבודדים שנכתבו על רקע ההיסטוריה המודרנית של מרכז אפריקה, הקריאה בו מהווה הזדמנות מאלפת להתוודע לאחד הסכסוכים המרים בעת החדשה"-- מן האתר עברית.
