"מגידו בת תקופת המקרא הייתה אחת הערים החשובות ביותר בארץ-ישראל במשך למעלה מארבעת אלפים שנה. נודע לה מקום מרכזי בגיבוש תולדותיה של ארץ-ישראל בתקופה ששלטו בה מלכי כנען ואחריהם מלכי ישראל ויהודה. באלף השני לפני הספירה הייתה מגידו עיר-ממלכה כנענית גדולה וחשובה ובתקופת ממלכת ישראל הייתה מגידו עיר מנהל מרכזית, ולאחר מכן מרכז צבאי. כאן נערך הקרב המכריע בין פרעה תחותמס הג' לבין מלכי כנען במאה הט"ו לפני הספירה, וכאן מצא את מותו יאשיהו מלך יהודה בידי פרעה נכה הב'. ארבע חפירות ארכיאולוגיות נערכו במגידו, כשהחפירה הרביעית שהחלה בשנת 1992, מתנהלת עד היום. חשיבותה המיוחדת של מגידו, ההיקף הנרחב של החפירות שהתנהלו בה, והממצאים המיוחדים שהתגלו בהן הפכו את תל מגידו לאתר מפתח ללימוד תולדותיה של ארץ-ישראל בתקופת המקרא. ספר זה בא לסכם לציבור הרחב, בלשון מובנת לכול, את תולדות מגידו ואת פרשת החפירות הרבות שנערכו בה". -- מהכריכה האחורית.
