Yaakov ben Yitzchak Ashkenazi 1550-1628
BookThis is the first scholarly English translation with annotations of the Ze'enah U-Re'enah, a Jewish classic first published in the beginning of the seventeenth century, and the most widely read work of Yiddish literature for centuries. It was the most popular and accessible anthological commentary to the Torah, Haftarot and five Megillot. Many generations of Jewish men and women more familar with Yiddish than Hebrew have studied the Torah through this commentary. This work provides an accessible introduction to the Jewish tradition of Biblical interpretation.

Notes |
Critical edition. "it is the conventional wisdom that the title of this work is Ze'enah U-Re'enah. It was in use as early as the second half of the seventeenth century. However, the phrase, Ze'enah U-Re'enah, is not the actual title of the work, rather it is Hamisha Humshei Torah bi-Lashon Ashkenaz."--Page 13. Includes bibliographical references and index. |
