"ברעום תותחי מלחמת העצמאות לא השתתקו המוזות; נהפוך הוא, הלוחמים, חיילים בצבא ההגנה לישראל - צבא שהלך והתגבש בתוך כדי שהוטל אל סערת הקרבות - הרבו בכתיבה. אחד מאפיקי הכתיבה היה ביטאון צה"ל. ביטאוני היחידות היו נפוצים מאוד בצה"ל של שנות תש"ח-תש"ט, והלוחמים ניצלו את הבימה שעמדה לרשותם, בדרך כלל בעילום שם. מפקדיהם בדרגות השונות ראו בביטאוני היחידות ערוץ להבעת רגשות ותחושות וגורם מגבש ומאחד. מבחינה זו היו הלוחם ומפקדיו תמימי דעים - הכתיבה היא חלק מהמערכה. בכתיבה נמהל האתגר הגדול של בניין הצבא והתמודדות עם ההזדמנות החד-פעמית שהעניקה ההיסטוריה, עם מצוקות היום-יום, עם הקשיים, הפחדים והחששות; אלה נכרכו עם היחס לאויב ועם היחס לחלקים מן העם שלכאורה אינם הולכים בתלם. הכתיבה נוגעת, בין השאר, במעמדן של נשים לוחמות ובנוכחותם של עולים חדשים בשדה הקרב. רבים מן הקטעים נכתבו בעת מבצע, ולכן במבצע הוא שמו של אחד הביטאונים; גם השמות במשלט ובמבצר מייצגים את הווי החיים שבהם נכתבו הטקסטים. משורות במבצע ודומיו מבצבצת ועולה דמות הלוחם של תש"ח-תש"ט, לוחם שלצד הרובה נשא עמו גם עט" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
