"לכל אדם המבקש לראות לויתן לצאת ולנדוד אל המים הרחוקים ביותר. לשם מוליכה הנובלה הזאת. אל מרחבים נסתרים, ספק מציאותיים ספק מדומיינים, אל מקום משכנו של הלויתן. סמוך לגיל ארבעים, בתום נישואים מייאשים, מתוך תחושת עקרות, מחליט יוני לנטוש את העולם שהכיר ולצאת למסע כדי לחזות בענק הימי שממנו הוקסם בילדותו. מסעו לוקח אותו לאוסטרליה, היבשת הרחוקה, שם הוא פוגש בגלריה ססגונית של טיפוסים: זוג שחקנים גרמנים, פרח כמורה אפריקאי וסוחר סמים ישראלי; נוודים, צליינים ומנודים. איש-איש והלויתן שהוא מבקש לראות.
