"בית-הספר לקסם אישי הוא רומן ריגול מסעיר שאי אפשר להניחו מן היד עד לסיומו הבלתי צפוי. עלילתו הסוחפת מתרחשת בימי המלחמה הקרה, ואף על פי שהקורא יעדיף להניח שכל פרטיה בדויים, לא מן הנמנע שהיא מבוססת על אמת מפתיעה ואיומה. גרגורי פישר, תייר אמריקני המטייל ברוסיה, נרצח - או לדברי שלטונות רוסיה, "נהרג בתאונת דרכים" - זמן קצר לאחר שדיווח לשגרירות ארצות הברית על פגישה מסתורית: לדבריו, פגש גבר שטען כי הוא טייס אמריקני שנחשב נעדר זה עשרים שנה לאחר שמטוסו הופל בווייטנאם. הוא סיפר כי הצליח לברוח מאחד מבתי הכלא הנוראים והשמורים בעולם הקרוי בית-הספר לקסם אישי, שבו מאלץ הקג"ב שבויים אמריקנים ללמד סוכנים רוסים כיצד להתחזות לאזרחי ארצות הברית על מנת שיוכלו לתקוף אותה מבפנים. איש צבא אמריקני, נספחת העיתונות בשגרירות וראש תחנת מוסקבה של הסי-אַיי-אֵיי חומקים במשימה סודית אל מעבר לקווי האויב כדי לחשוף את קיומה של תוכנית הריגול המזעזעת. לא רק מערכת היחסים השברירית שבין וושינגטון למוסקבה נתונה כעת בידיהם, אלא גם גורלו של העולם כולו." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
