"במשעול הקונספציות" מציג לפני הקורא תמונה חסרת רחמים של הישראליוּת בת ימינו: העשירים והמקושרים, ולעומתם חסרי הקשרים והמזל; הערמומיים והמתקמבנים, מול אלה שלא מבינים מה קורה סביבם; העולים (ובעיקר העולות) המנסים למצוא את מקומם בישראל, ולעומתם הישראלים המנסים למצוא את מקומם בארץ אחרת. דב בהט מתבונן בדמויותיו במבט אירוני וחומל. יחד איתו אנחנו מלגלגים עליהן, ובה-בעת מרגישים כלפיהן חיבה. בסיפור אחד לבנו יוצא אל טלי, המתבגרת המצוברחת שמפתה את החבר של אמא שלה, וגם אל אמא אורנה, ששמחה שלפחות טלי קיבלה קצת ביטחון עצמי. ובסיפור אחר צובטת את לבנו טניה, שמגדלת כלב אימתני ומרגיעה "זה בסדר, הוא לא עושה שום דבר". ובאמת, גם כשבעלה מרביץ לה הכלב לא עושה שום דבר. מצחיקות ומכמירות לב במיוחד הן הדמויות הקלולסיות - אלה שאין להן מושג למי להתחנף ומתי לשקר. כזה הוא הרקטור הטרי של "האוניברסיטה החדשה", שמצליח להיפטר מפרופסור נודניק ואז מופתע לגלות שהנודניק הוא האיש החזק במערכת". מאתר נוריתה - מבט אל ספרים וספרות בגובה העיניים.
