"אחד הסופרים המובילים כיום בברזיל, בסיפור מהפנט על מסעו המשקם של גבר צעיר אל חופיה של דרום ברזיל, אשר הופך למפגש אלים עם העבר של משפחתו. סמוך למותו, אביו של גבר צעיר מספר לבנו את האמת הנוגעת למות סבו, או לפחות את האמת כפי שהוא מכיר אותה. הגאושו הזקן נרצח על ידי שכניו בגרופבה, עיירה מנומנמת השוכנת לחוף האוקיינוס האטלנטי ומפורסמת כיום כמרכז גלישה ודיג. למעשה היה מדובר בהוצאה להורג על ידי אזרחים שלקחו את החוק לידיהם. או לפחות זה מה שמספרים בקרב המשפחה. בניסיון להתחקות אחר האמת יוצא הבן לגרופבה בלוויית כלבתו הזקנה של אביו המנוח. הוא מוצא דירה ליד המים ובונה לעצמו חיים חדשים ופשוטים: הוא שוחה כל יום בים, רוכש לו חברים חדשים, נכנס למערכת יחסים ובד בבד מתחיל לחקור את נסיבות מותו של הסב. אך המידע לא מגיע בקלות. אלה שיודעים משהו לגבי סבו נראים מפוחדים, אפילו רדופים ..." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
