"ביאליק הטביע חותם על כל תחום שבו שלח את ידו: שירה, סיפורת, אגדה, מסה, ספרות ילדים ועוד. תחום אחד נשאר לכאורה מיותם, ללא חותמו האישי, והוא התאטרון. אף על פי כן ביאליק נמשך לתאטרון כבחבלי-קסם, ויצירתו מעידה על חשיבה תאטרלית מורכבת: יש בה מונולוגים, דיאלוגים, וקריאות aside, קטעי סולו ומקהלה, חלוקה ל'מערכות' עם 'תפאורה' מתגוונת, מופעי ריקוד עם הוראות כוריאוגרפיה מרומזת, תעלולי תאורה ואביזרי במה. לאה גולדברג זיהתה את הפוטנציאל התאטרוני החבוי ביצירת ביאליק בשעה שעיבדה את 'אגדת שלושה וארבעה' שלוש פעמים למען הבמה העברית ... הספר עוקב אחר זיקתו של ביאליק לתאטרון, למן מערכוני הבוסר שחיבר בימי לימודיו בישיבה בוולוזין, עבור אל תרגומיו למחזות מספרות עם ישראל (הדיבוק) ומספרות העולם (וילהלם טל והמערכה הראשונה של יוליוס קיסר), וכלה בתעלומת המחזה האבוד שתמשיך להעסיק את חקר ביאליק גם להבא". -- כריכה אחורית.
