"יידה שו, אסטרופיזיקאית צעירה ומבריקה, מגלה ביום בהיר אחד כי כוכב השביט אייקון, הנע במסלול סמוך לכדור הארץ, משחרר אנרגיה חריגה העלולה להסיט אסטרואידים ממסלולם ולהפנותם למסלול התנגשות המסכן מיליוני תושבים. כדי להתחקות אחר האנרגיה של ?אייקון? נעזרת ממשלת ארצות-הברית בלוויין חדשני המכונה "עין האלוהים". שניות לאחר שהעביר למרכז הבקרה תמונות מדאיגות של חורבן, הלוויין מתרסק. כאשר מתברר כי חלקיו התפזרו במונגוליה, מגויס כוח סיגמה, ואיתו גם ג׳יידה, למשימה אולטרה-סודית למציאתם. אל חברי הכוח מצטרף גם ויגור ורונה, שקיבל מתנה משונה: גולגולת עתיקה וספר כרוך בעור אדם. על הגולגולת חרות התאריך שבו יגיע העולם אל קיצו, התואם את נתוני הלוויין שהתרסק. במירוץ נגד השעון חוצים גריי, סײצ׳ן, קוואלסקי וחבריהם החדשים את הגלובוס ממערב למזרח, מנסים לאתר את שרידי הלוויין. עד מהרה מתברר כי הסכנה אינה נשקפת רק מהאנרגיה הקוונטית בחלל, אלא מגורמים ארציים מאוד השואפים לגדולה, ואינם בוחלים באמצעים הקטלניים ביותר כדי להשיגה". -- מהמעטפת האחורית.
