"הספר מתייחס ל'עלייה השנייה החלוצית' שעמה נמנו אנשי 'בר גיורא' ו'השומר' והוא סוקר את קורות הנשים בארגונים הללו ובקיבוץ כפר גלעדי עד שנת 1939, שנת פרוץ מלחמת העולם השנייה. החברה השומרית הייתה חברת מעטים שמנתה עשרות בודדות של גברים ונשים. הייתה זו קבוצה שראתה בהיותה מיעוט - יתרון, מהות של אוונגרד מוביל. זהו מחקר היסטורי-חברתי מקיף אודות חיי היום-יום של 'השומר', חיי המשפחה, הרכב החברה השומרית, היחס לאישה, היחס לאלמנות וליתומים, השפעת השמירה על חיי המשפחה ועוד. המיתוס הקיים לגבי 'השומר' רואה את השומרות כמי ששמרו שכם אל שכם עם השומרים וכמי שעשויות ללא חת, מורדות במוסכמות ומערערות על תפיסת הגבריות של הארגון, אשר תפיסת 'המשימה מעל לכל' הייתה לו מוטו מוביל של חיי אנשיו. הספר משתמש במגדר ככלי מחקרי, כדי לבחון את יחסי המגדר והמשפחה כמעצבים את ייחודיותה של החברה השומרית". -- מעטפת אחורית.
