אמצע המאה ה-19 הייתה תקופה של שינויים פוליטיים נרחבים ושל מודרניזציה בלתי נמנעת. מסעות התאפשרו הודות להתפתחויות הטכנולוגיות, במיוחד ספינת הקיטור המונעת על ידי פחם והטלגרף החשמלי, אפשרות הלינה בבתי-מלון והופעתן של סוכנויות נסיעות מאורגנות. באופן ייחודי לאמריקאים, בעקבות מלחמת האזרחים (1865-1861) סיפקו המסעות לארץ הקודש, אז חלק מן האימפריה העותומאנית, הזדמנות להתחדשות רוחנית. בתערוכה זו זוכה הסופר וההומוריסט מארק טווין למקום נכבד. רשמיו ממסעותיו ומהרפתקאותיו בארץ הקודש שקובצו בספר התמימים בחוץ לארץ (1869) תרמו לראשיתו של עידן חדש בספרות המסע. מבקרים אמריקאים חשובים נוספים המוצגים בתערוכה הנם הסופר הרמן מלוויל ושני גנרלים ממלחמת האזרחים: יוליסס ס. גרנט ווויליאם ט. שרמן. כולם התארחו במלון מדיטרניאן הירושלמי, מוקד העניין ב"חדרי אירוח". אכסניה זו הייתה גם יעד מתוכנן עבור משפחת רוזוולט. כתבי היד והמסמכים המוצגים בתערוכה לקוחים מאוסף קרן שאפל לכתבי יד. הספרים והמזכרות לקוחים מאוספי הספרייה הלאומית.
