Memoirs by Rivosh (1906-1957), an assimilated Russian-speaking Jew, on his survival in German-occupied Riga in 1941-44. He wrote the first two chapters while in a hideout in 1943-44, and the last chapter, "The Cellar", after the liberation of Riga by the Soviets. Describes the transfer of the Jews to a ghetto in September 1941, the sealing of the ghetto in October, and mass murders of Jews in November and December. Rivosh's wife and two children were deported in December and perished; he and other slave laborers were forced to cleanse the emptied "bigger" ghetto after the Nazi actions. In February 1942 he escaped from the ghetto and was hidden and helped by friendly Latvians, mainly the families Ankravs and Priede. After the war Rivosh married Ludmila Znotina, a Russian friend of his first wife, who had also taken part in his rescue.
