Memoirs of a Polish Jew (b. 1920) from November 1939, when he left Kraków and settled in Lvov, then occupied by the Soviets. In January 1941 he moved to Krzemieniec, where he was interned in the ghetto and then sent to work in the Winnica labor camp. He fled from the camp with a friend, and entered the Dubno ghetto. Half of the ghetto population was killed in May 1942. Describes life in the ghetto and attempts of escape. After one of the roundups, he and some other young Jews left the ghetto and entered the forest. He met his future wife, and the two lived with a group in the forest, helped by peasants from nearby villages. Describes their existence there, its dangers and difficulties. In 1944, when the Soviets approached the area, he and a friend enlisted in the Red Army. He was with the army when it entered Berlin. After the war he returned to Poland, and became an army officer, achieving the rank of colonel. The family left Poland when Schneider was fired from his job during the antisemitic campaign of 1968, and settled in Israel.
