זה החל כמבחן גבריות של צאצאי הבורגנות האירופית באמצע המאה ה-19, וזה הפך עד מהרה למשחק מבוקש של מעמד הפועלים, שאימץ אותו אל לבו. מדינת הלאום המודרנית, שנמצאה אז בשלבי התהוות, קפצה עליו כמוצאת שלל רב: הכדורגל אצר עבורה פוטנציאל לאירוע של תרבות המונים שיבטיח את ההגמוניה שלה. ואכן, בתוך זמן לא רב ממיסוד הכדורגל נצמדה אליו הלאומיות ואנסה אותו להישמע לה. שחקני הנבחרות הלאומיות לבשו את צבעי הלאום והפכו למייצגים הבולטים ביותר של הלאום והמדינה ברגעי ההפוגה בין המלחמות הריטואליסטיות. מדינת הלאום ניכסה את פרות הניצחון ותפללה את תוגת הכישלון – משחק הכדורגל הופקע מעתה לטובת העם והמדינה. הספר כדורגל ולאומיות בוחן מקרוב את האופן שבו הכדורגל הישראלי, שקדם להקמת המדינה, ליווה אותה בצייתנות ובהכנעה מראשית דרכה. מדינת ישראל, שמנהיגיה לא העריכו במיוחד את המשחק העממי הזה, ידעה לעשות בו שימוש ציוני כאשר היה לה צורך בכך, והכדורגל הישראלי היה אפוף אפוא בסממני הלאומיות הציונית-יהודית כריכה אחורית
