"מחקר זה מהווה נסיון ראשון ליישום כולל של הסוציולינגוויסטיקה, הידועה כתורה בלשנית חדשנית בתחום הבלשנות השמית המשווה, בהדגשת הצד המתודולוגי. למיטב ידיעתנו, המגעים הרבים שהתקיימו במהלך ההיסטוריה בין העברית ובין לשונות שמיות אחרת, היו מגעים תרבותיים-ספרותיים בלבד. בימי הבית השני, בתקופת התנאים, נוצר רקע היסטורי מתאים למגע דיבורי בין העברית והארמית שהביא לידי דיגלוסיה, מצב שבו יודעים הדוברים יפה את שתי הלשונות, ורוכשים מיומנות לעבור מלשון ללשון בתהליך הדיבור. נסיבות היסטוריות גרמו לכך שהארמית הפכה או לדומיננטית, והשפיעה על העברית הרבה בתחומי המילון והסמנטיקה, אך לא מעט גם בתחום הדקדוק: במורפולוגיה, בתחביר ובסגנון. המחקר מעמיד במרכז את שני הקטנים של תורה חדשנית זו: החברה וצרכיה כנגד קשיחותו של מבנה הלשון, ומתאר את יחס הגומלין ביניהם, יחס הקובע את תוצאות המגע." -- מהכריכה האחורית
