הספר הזה - המתאר בלשון ריאליסטית בוטה, ללא כחל ושרק, את הדרדרותו של אדי, נרקומן בן נרקומנים, לעולם הסמים, ואת מאבקו הקשה כדי להשתחרר מכבלי הסם - לא נועד לקוראי הצעירים, תלמידי בית הספר היסודי, אלא לתלמידי חטיבת הביניים, והחטיבה העליונה ואף למבוגרים. העולם שבו חי אד, מורכב מחומרים קשים. יש בו זנות ופשיעה, אלימות והשפלה, תוקפנות ונטישה - עלילות כואבות ומקוממות, המתארות וחושפות את צד הצל של חיים, צד שלא כל הגיבורים הפועלים בספר מצליחים להתמודד אתו. אבל ישנו גם צד האור, המספק חיזוקים, המפיח תקווה ואופטימיות, המאפשר להתגבר על הכשלונות, להתנקות מהסם ולהשתחרר מן האזיקים. בעולם היצרי והאכזר הזה, המכוער והמפורק מערכים, מתפתחת ידידות אמיצה בין שלושת גיבורי הספר - אדי, יקי ועומרי, ויותר מכל: צומחת ועולה אהבה, אהבתם של ענת ואדי. פריה של אהבה זו הוא הילד אבנר, שבהולדתו ובעצם קיומו מסמל את תחייתו מחדש של אביו. מכוח הידידות, וביחוד מכוחה של האהבה, בעזרתם התומכת, המכוונת והמעודדת של צוות המדריכים והעובדים הסוציאלים בכפר הגמילה נווה יונתן, מצליח אדי לטפס ולעלות ממעמקי התהום האפלה שבנפשו בתקוה שירפא וינצח, ולא יכנע עוד למדוחי הסם.
