Memoirs of a Jew born in Baghdad in 1925. After the 1941 pogrom, Shashoua and some friends organized a short-lived Jewish self-defense group which patrolled Jewish areas, urged the Jews to learn self-defense, and advocated emigration to Eretz-Israel. Shashoua then joined a Zionist youth movement which arranged illegal emigration for Jews; their activities included forging passports and planning escape routes. In 1946 Shashoua himself attempted an escape which failed and resulted in his incarceration, but he soon succeeded in reaching Eretz-Israel. Pp. 90-186 contain the stories of some of his siblings and relatives.
