אין להבין יפה לא את ההלכה ולא את האגדה מבלי להכיר את צורת החיים דאז, מבלי לבחון את המקורות התלמודיים הדנים ב"מציאות הממשית" ובהווי הארץ-ישראלי של חז"ל. ספר זה עוסק בכלים ובמתקנים ארץ-ישראליים מן התקופה הרומית, כשהוא מתבסס על מקורות ההלכה והאגדה בשילוב עם עדויות ארכיאולוגיות תוך השוואה עם אזכורים שבספרות היוונית והלטינית בת התקופה. הניתוח משלב בדיקה טקסטואלית, אטימולוגית והלכתית ומאפשר שיחזורם של כלים ומתקנים מכל מגוון חיי היום-יום של ארץ-ישראל התלמודית. דרך חקירה זו אף הביאה לידי פתרון סתומות בספרות ההלכה של חז"ל. העיונים מקיפים תחומים שונים, כגון: מתקני שאיבת מים, חלקי הבית, כלים ביתיים למיניהם, בגדים, עגלות וספינות. האיורים הרבים המעטרים ספר זה אינם לקישוט בעלמא, אלא מהווים חלק בלתי נפרד של הטקסט והדיון – וכולם משמשים להצגת הריאליה התלמודית. -- מהכריכה האחורית של חלק [א].
