A popular account of the history of the Jews in the British Isles from Roman times. Emphasizes antisemitism in medieval British society, arguing that Jews fared worse in Britain than elsewhere in Europe. Uses quotations from historical sources (in modern English) to retell the stories of antisemitic outbursts, such as the blood libel in Norwich (1144), the pogrom during Richard I's coronation (1189), and the massacre of the Jews in York (1190). Views the period after the resettlement as one of toleration, mentioning only the 1753 wave of antisemitism over the naturalization bill, various antisemitic incidents in late 19th century Ireland, and the activities of the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s. Contains many illustrations, including medieval and modern caricatures of Jews.
