Arvit (Ma’ariv) for Shabbat

Arvit Shel Shabbat is similar in essence and structure to the weekday evening prayer, but it distinguishes itself through its unique melodies and tunes, in the formulation of unified blessings, and in additional elements unique to it.

Following the psalms of welcoming the Shabbat, the prayer commences with either the Half Kaddish or Barechu, depending on customs, followed by the blessings of the Keriat Shema. In the Hashkivenu prayer, there is a modification in the prayer text for Shabbat, with the main addition being the request for God to spread over us the Sukkah of peace. In the Sephardic version, the detailed enumeration of afflictions found in the weekday prayer is minimized, likely to avoid addressing matters that might cause distress on Shabbat. After that, the congregation recites the "Veshameru" passage (Exodus 31:16-17).

The Amidah prayer for Shabbat has its own unique formulation. Instead of the thirteen intermediate blessings of the weekday Amidah, there is a single blessing that focuses on Shabbat, concluding with "Mekadesh HaShabbat," sanctifying the Shabbat. The worshiper engages solely in the experience of Shabbat.

Following the Amidah, the congregation remains standing and collectively recites with melody the verses "Vaykhulu Hashamayim..." (Genesis 2:1-3). These verses, excerpted from the Creation story, emphasize the blessing of the Shabbat, its sanctity, and the rest within it. 

Immediately after, the cantor recites the abbreviated repetition of the Amidah, "Birkat Me'en Sheva". This unique custom aims to linger a bit in the synagogue so that those who delay coming to the popular evening prayer, won't need to return home alone. Usually, a sermon is delivered during the prayer, utilizing the pulpit for religious teachings. The prayer also offers a platform for community announcements. The evening prayer is highly popular, attracting Jews from all walks of life and often serving as a social gathering opportunity upon exiting the synagogue.

In many synagogues, there was even a practice to recite Kiddush after the evening prayer for the worshipers and guests, but today this custom has ceased.

At the end of the prayer, it is customary to sing the piyutim "Yigdal" or "Adon Olam".

In Nusach Sefard it is customary to precede the Friday evening prayer with KeGavna, taken from the Zohar:

KEGAVNA

Just as they [the “Zeir Anpin,”comprising the six divine Kabbalistic Sefirot of Chesed, Gevurah, Tiphereth, Netzach, Hod and Yesod] unite above in oneness, so does she [The Kabbalistic Sefira of Malkhut] unifies below in the secret of oneness, to be joined with them that are above, one against one. The Almighty, one above, does not sit on his throne of glory until she unifies in the secret of oneness, akin to Him, becoming one to one. And here we have been enlightened the secret of “God is one and His name is one” (Zechariah 14, 9).
The secret of Shabbat: She, the Shabbat, unifies in the secret of oneness, to be imbued by the secret of oneness.
[During] the Shabbat evening prayer, the holy throne [The Sefira of Malkhut] is unified by the secret of oneness, and prepares herself to be imbued by the supreme holy king.

When Shabbat enters, she unifies and separates from the “Other Side'', and all judgments remove themselves from her, and she remains in the unification of the holy light, and is adorned with several crowns for the holy king, and all governments of anger and all prosecutors flee and withdraw from her, and there is no other government in all the worlds.
And her face shines with transcendent light, and she is adorned below among the holy nation, and all are adorned with new souls. Then begins the prayer, to joyously bless her with a radiant face.

DIVINE SANCTIFICATION
You are holy and Your Name is holy
and holy beings
praise You every day, forever.
For a great and Almighty King—
great and holy—are You.

You have sanctified the seventh day
to Your Name,
[it was] the purpose of

and my lips from speaking deceitfully.
To those who curse me,
may my soul be unresponsive;

that He has not made us
like the nations of the lands,

our portion like theirs,
nor our lot like that of all their multitudes.
For they prostrate themselves
to vanity and nothingness,

in banishing idolatry from the earth,
and the false gods
will be utterly exterminated
to perfect the world
as the kingdom of Shadai.
And all mankind will invoke Your Name,
to turn back to You,
all the wicked of the earth.
They will realize and know,
all the inhabitants of the world,
that to You, every knee must bend,
every tongue must swear [allegiance to You].
Before You, Hashem, our God,
they will bow and prostrate themselves,
and to the glory of Your Name give honor.

the yoke of Your kingdom,
and You will reign over them, soon,

For the kingdom is Yours,
and to all eternity You will reign in glory,

It is customary to sing after the prayer the piyut Adon Olam, and some say these Pesukim after:
Do not fear sudden terror
nor the destruction of the wicked
when it comes.
Take counsel together and it will be foiled
speak the word and it will not stand
for God is with us.

to your older years I will sustain you,
