The Angelica Library, founded in 1604 by the Augustinian bishop Angelo Rocca , was the first European library open to the public. The ancient fund is estimated at around 120,000 volumes mainly related to Augustinian thought and to the history of the reform and the Counter-Reformation. The institutional aim of the Library is to protect, enhance and increase this heritage. Since 1940 it has been the seat of the Arcadian Literary Academy. Since 1975 it is part of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. One of the most important collections is the one given by the Prior General of the Augustinian Egidio da Viterbo (1469-1532), which contains Hebrew materials, for example a Hebrew dictionary.
