-jje 33 rd Annual Convention of California Music Teachers As- ^ e sociation convened in Hollywood Monday for a three day seslast sion . With Pre & ident Winifred Lucia Fisher of Sacramento presidthe mor-ing session brought io greetings from the City of Hollywood by Mayor Fletcher Bowron , John Kings ! ey and Newman Tucker . Ruth ikowell , president of the Los Angeles County Chapter made an address of welcome to the visitors . An . eloquent response of gratitude was then delivered by Mrs . Fisher . Following the luncheon at which Abbie Norton Jamison , former state president was hostess , the afternoon session was devoted to lectures , forums , regional reports , a piano recital by Samuel Rodetsky of San Francisco , and a vocal program by Harry McKnight of Sacramento . The meeting closed with an address on The Present Outlook for American Music and Musicians by R . Vernon Steele , publisher of the Pacific Coast Musician . « J he Evening Session In the evening a Fellowship Dinner , held at the Roosevelt Hotel , headquarters of the convention , brought invitations to the following guests of honor : L . E . Behymer , Mrs . Leiland Atherton . Irish , Deanna Durbin , Frank P . Doherty , John Kingsley , Richard Hageman , Dan Addison , Wm . Richardson , Dr . Ernst Toch and Alice Evans Field . Guest speakers were Prof . Arnold Schoenberg and Dr . Karl Wecker . The latters address , deeply felt and thoughtful , touched upon the wide scope and importance of music and musicians in war work compared to the relatively insignificant recognition given the arts and artists by the ogevernment . Artists , said Dr . Wecker , are generally speaking , officially placed in about thesame category as bootblacks . The trend of his rej marks left the convention in a <* mood of serious retrospection . Mr . Behymer , when called upon for a few words , said reproachfully , that the U . S . Government was the only one in the world , large or small , that did not include a Ministry of Arts and Education . Mrs . Irish , too , in a brief address kept to the serious rather than her usual humorous mood and brought a sigh from the audience after telling it that for last week s concert by Bruno Walter , one of the worldd s greatest conductors , only 3900 people attended HollyWood Bowl . The open session was brought to j a conclusion at a rather late hour with a recital by the very capable Pianist Lillian Steuber , whose program contained works of Ernst Toch , Joseph Achron , Villa-Lobos and Brahms .

fa Week of Bowl Concerts Highli ghts of the first week of Hollywood Bowl concerts not avalIable for last week s report , include the appearance of Bruno Walter in a program notably more Polished in detail than has been customary thus far . Symphonies ty Beethoven and Dvorak were Je received as were the latter s ree Slavonic Dances . Oscar Levant , too , was enthusiastically accaimed for his laudable performnce of the Gershwin concerto—n idiom , incidentally , in which he far m ° re effective than that of the \ Norwegian melodist , Edward Grieg . th , * m ° st spontaneous and enjpiastic outburst of the week , Seemed to mewas accorded the I PrivT Un ? Wedding Bells Two important matrimonial announcements interesting to the music world were made known last week . The first was that Efrem Zimbalist had married Mrs . Edward Curtis Bok . The second brought news of the engagement of the brilliant Los Angeles pianist , Sergeant Eugene List to the vivacious violinist , Carrol Glenn . Zimbalist , director of the Curtic Institute in Philadelphia , was the husband of the late Alma Gluck , distinguished soprano of the Metropolitan Opera . The new Mrs . Zimbalist is the daughter of Cyrus H . K . Curtis , former publisher of the Saturday Evening Post and the Philadelphia Ledger . She founded the famous Curtis Institute in 1924 and endowed the instittuion 12 % million dollars . Leopold Stokowski , Josef Hoffman , Marcella Sembrich and Leopold Auer were among the distinguished musicians | connected with the Institute s faculty at various times . Readers of this column may recall many references to Carrol Glenn as one of the nations finest young violinists . She won the biennial contest of the National Federation of Music Clubs held in Los ; Angeles in 1941 . This carried a prize of $ 1000 . In addition she was awarded the coveted Schubert Memorial prize which brought her appearance with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra .
